Visitors
from all corners of the globe have discovered that this country's
long coastline - it stretches from Cambodia in the east, and Myanmar
(Burma) in the west, to Malaysia in the south - offers some of the
finest diving opportunities not only in Asia but anywhere in the world.
Thailand's main dive centres are : |
| Phuket |
The
majority of diving desti?nations close to Phuket are located in nearby
Phang Nga, where hundreds of limestone islands rise dramatically from
the blue waters of Phang Nga Bay. Also popular are the largely uninhab?ited
Similan Islands, recently listed among the world's ten most beautiful
spots for underwater scenery by Skin Diving Magazine in the U.S. The
spec?tacular Phi Phi Islands near Phuket are popular too. True enthusiasts
can hire boats for excursions to the Similan Is?lands, 80 kilometres
northwest of Phuket, which have clear waters similar to those found
in the Maldives, the Caribbean, and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.
On the other i sides of the peninsula in the Gulf
of Thailand is the Ang Thong Islands National Marine Park, a group
of more than 40 beautiful islands off the west ofSuratThani province
and near Samui Island. |
| Pattaya
: Chonburi |
Scuba
divers can organise daily trips from the resort to the offshore islands
of Ko Lan, Ko Sak, and Ko Krok, all of which take only 45 minutes
to reach; interesting coral formations and colourful fish are visible
for up to 30 metres, depending on the season.
Instruction: Many training facilities exist in
both Pattaya and Phuket with properly qualified instructors who are
members of two highly respected and internationally recognised instructors'
associations: PADI (Professional Association of Instructors) or NAUI
(National Association of Underwater Instructors). Normally, the schools
start beginners in local swimming pools, quickly progressing to the
open sea to face the real challenges of scuba diving. Among the languages
spoken in these schools are English, German, Dutch, French, and Japanese.
At most diving centres, the latest type of equipment is available
for hire.
